Who knew?? Perhaps you but not me… I appear to have arrived at this particular dressed-down party extremely late. You know the look I’m referring to right? The one ably demonstrated by style influencers and celebs the world over… generally it’s the preferred formula of those who are 22, of tiny proportions, workout a lot (thereby necessitating said athleisure clothing) and do this✌🏼when taking a selfie wearing it. And I’m not throwing shade here BTW… merely pointing out that it’s a look that belongs to a defined tribe and was one that I didn’t think would work for me… until now!

Cue one dark January day (there’s been a few - take your pick), where it didn’t stop p*ssing down all the live-long day, three dog walks around the village and a trip to the supermarket. Follow that up with the next day when the sun returned and I had done my usual trick of getting dressed in the same thing as the day before. Et voila! My discovery that the foundations of this look can be the same but it’s what goes on top that makes it insanely practical. Levels of comfort for working at home in leggings and a sweatshirt are more than acceptable, the waterproofs and paired with my short wellies kept me dry whilst walking Biscuit, the trench and knee high boots more than sufficed for the supermarket trip and the next day, on went the wool coat, trainers, sunnies - topped off with red lipstick to celebrate the return of the sunshine. I felt comfortable in all of these looks and stylishly confident in two of them. I’ll take that 50% success rate thanks!
my athleisure add-ons
Have a go at re-creating these looks with what you already have in your wardrobe. Over the years, I’ve found that by building up a collection of staples and basics, it becomes easier to take inspiration from style content and come up with an outfit version of my own. I usually shop with brands like COS and ARKET because their core styles have longevity and are often re-issued season after season.
And don’t forget to search and use alerts for key pieces on pre-loved sites such as e-Bay, Vinted and Vestiaire Collective.
