Despite the Stop/Start/Oh-For-Goodness-Sake-Get-On-With-It weather this spring, I’m still full steam ahead in thinking about all the wardrobe possibilities that now lurk tantalisingly over the horizon. My default mood is yearning for blazers and wondering whether it’s too soon to get the linen trousers out of storage. I don’t know about you but I find that as a new season approaches – especially spring – it’s all too easy to get carried away on a tidal wave of new wardrobe possibilities… especially if you’re thinking of adding one or two new season pieces into the mix. So… if in doubt, always go back to basics first.

Staples or basics… what do you call yours? Over the years I’ve come to think of them as one and the same… i.e. can’t live without them. I guess you could argue that simple T-shirts, vests, jeans can be classed as basics, and the infamous white shirt, those really good trousers or the trench coat that sits just right on you all fall under the banner of staples. To me, they’re as indispensable as each other when it comes to the mantra of Minimal Relaxed & Effortless and all have key roles to play. Not only that but once you nail the staples or basics (Stasics?), the opportunities for interchangeable everyday looks increases tenfold – case in point – I’d count everything I’m wearing in the header image as a basic but they all happen to work well together.

The Basics

Your version of wardrobe basics might be different to mine – those who adore a riot of colour, print and pattern would fall asleep whilst going through my selection – but seeing as you’re here, I’m assuming we’ve both committed to putting up our tents in the muted minimal camp. For the most part, I work on the basis that every season has its own set of necessary basics and below are a few looks that I’ll be pulling out of my wardrobe now… whilst furtively checking the weather App to see when its practical to actually start leaving the house in them…

style notes…

A word on the denim midi skirts - these are as hot as Adidas Sambas at the moment and the H&M version I included here was selling fast at the time of writing - it’s always worth signing up to be notified when you find something that you love as the popular pieces are pretty much always restocked - especially at the start of a new season. This Monsoon version at John Lewis had more varied sizes left, this one is good value and I also really liked the offering from Mango too.

Wide leg jeans are definitely having a moment, although to be honest, they’re a perennial favourite for me. I keep seeing this Boden pair everywhere at the moment - they’re a good value mid-range price point and will only get better with age. If you have the budget then Agolde would be all kinds of awesome but don’t be put off by the high street offerings either - I have a pair similar to these from H&M and they’re still going strong some five years on. The secret with any jeans is wash rarely… and if you have to, do it on a cold cycle.

I may be biased over my own choices but I think there are three style game changers in Look 4. First up is the Anine Bing cap which I have because guess what… it fits my ridiculously large head - thank you Anine, I think I love you! Put this on with any casual outfit and the style stakes are instantly raised. Then there’s the simple act of layering a vest under the shirt - visible layers always score highly. And last but not least - that NYC tote for under £15. You have no idea how restrained I’m having to be not adding that into my basket right now!

Last but not least, I’m have a real thing for loafers at the moment - I’ve been wearing them with socks whilst its still chilly but can’t wait to do the bare ankles thing soon. The pair featured here are by COS and I almost opted for them - the chain detail was a big plus - but in the end, this leather Marks and Spencer pair won. They look and feel considerably luxurious for their below £50 price point. I also love these by & Other Stories too - they are killing it with their footwear at the moment!

Do you have a favourite look from this selection and will you be raiding your wardrobe to recreate any of the outfits?
