Who is Nora Brannock you might well ask. My answer would be a new minimalist style icon… who happens to be the female lead in the Netflix drama, The Watcher. If you’ve not yet seen it, it’s based on true (and as yet unsolved) events that happened after the Brannock family moved into their dream home… that quickly turned into a living hell. If you’re familiar with the show, I think we can pretty much agree on three things - it was mind-f*ck scary, the ending was beyond frustrating and Naomi Watts as Nora had us all in the palm of her hand with that wardrobe. To be specific, that largely unfeasible but completely covetable, neutral creamy-white wardrobe.

If you’ve no wish to sit through several hours of nail biting episodes only to find yourself shouting “WTF??” at the ending - just hop over here to Pinterest to see what all the fuss is about when it comes to Nora’s sartorial efforts. I know… it’s good right? A minimalist’s dream… and any dry cleaners’ fast-track ticket to healthy profits all round I would imagine.

I have A LOT of neutrals in my wardrobe - which I’m guessing is why you’re here - but the styling of Nora’s outfits - the effortless tonal layers, soft touchable textures, flowing coats, Birkenstocks indoors, chunky DM boots outdoors - was a stealth masterclass in how to elevate neutrals to the next level.

Nora went about her days (albeit days that held multiple terrors at times), seemingly unconcerned about the maintenance of her enviable ecru ensembles. Stand by a smoky fire pit with a cream cashmere blanket draped around your person whilst being observed by the freakiest of neighbours? Sure. Sip from a HUGE glass of red wine whilst sporting a silky white skirt and chunky knitted sweater and having an intense discussion with your husband as to who might be behind the creepy letters telling you to give the house “young blood”. No problem.

I guess Nora had more important things to think about than her epic dry cleaning bill.

Sartorial sarcasm aside, I’ve been taking style pointers from Nora - the outfit above being a first attempt for a lunch date with a friend. The trench and boots paired with a cream wool dress, tonal bag and requisite cashmere scarf seemed to work - my date’s first words were “Ooh that outfit… very Nora Brannock!”

If you know, you know…

Chunky sweaters over a softly pleated skirt, wide-leg tailored trousers with plenty of slouch, cashmere loungewear, a relaxed wool vest layered over a thin merino turtleneck (Diane Keaton and Nora Brannock vibes), and don’t forget the essential cream or beige coat. Tailored wool, soft-as-a-cloud puffer, faux fur or trench - anything goes so long as it’s in neutral. Don’t worry - the joy of wearing it far outweighs the stress of having to scream “DON’T COME ANYWHERE NEAR ME!” to everyone you pass.

Nora layered on ALL the gold jewellery - a good strategy for warming up what is essentially a head to toe, cool neutral palette. Multiple necklaces, a chunky gold tone watch and plenty of rings are a pre-requisite. Extreme chunky boots bring a contemporary edge to a slip or pleated skirt. If you have a head that fits one-size hats then I envy you - I would so wear the bejesus out of a fedora if I could. Bags need to be oversized and malleable - I think that both the Kin and The White Company suede totes featured here are a lot of luxe for the money - and when it comes to scarves, the more blanket-like the better.

All the better for hiding behind I guess.

Will be you be taking some style cues from Naomi’s Nora this winter? Have you seen The Watcher? And Watts up with that ending?? [I’m here all year round.] Despite being left kind of hanging by it (it is after all an unsolved case), I’m still glad I put the hours into the show - the wardrobe gazing alone was more than worth it.
