I know, I know. I hear myself say it and I’m instantly caught in Meryl’s withering gaze as she spits out “Florals? For spring? Ground-breaking.” But this year I’m fully onboard with a smidge of red about my person. Perhaps it’s the short dark days or the need to simply embrace the cheeriness of the season - whatever the reason, I’m here for it. I would wager I’ve subconsciously absorbed the messages about pops of red being touted as a winter trend but let’s not reinvent the wheel here – red as we approach Christmas is a tale as old as time, this and every year. It’s a hit of warmth, a nod to seasonal joy and just the right amount of tradition to fuel my inner festive fires that finally began to smoulder into life a few days ago.
Being from the minimal stable, I’d advocate for not too much at once - my preferred formula is red worn with something in a warm beige or camel-coloured hue. I have this cashmere sweater from COS – perfect with tailored trousers like these and I’ll be wearing a red cashmere beanie (this one is a glorious shade of fiery tomato) with my grey and beige winter coats on repeat. As for traditional tartan, I could easily see myself in the classic denim/white Tee/open shirt combo… even though I can’t even think about plaid shirts anymore unless they’re in the context of the days and nights that Taylor spent with Mr Gyllenhaal… and we all know how that one ended. I’m still VERY disappointed in you Jake and you’ve completely ruined the concept of a cosy button down layer for me.

Scoundrel Hollywood men aside, don’t save your reds just for the wardrobe or cosy winter PJs. The Ralph Lauren Holiday Candle is my all-time favourite seasonal scent and smells every bit as good as the packaging looks… in fact anything in red from Ralph Lauren at this time of year feels appropriate.
For a seasonal red lip try Charlotte Tilbury KISSING in Love Bite and should I find the time to paint my nails during the holidays, then I always opt for Essie in Fishnet Stockings. Both of which make me sound quite vampish but this look is far closer to my actual December vibe.
To bring this rouge ramble to a close, take a look at this J.Crew Holiday season campaign that I recently fell head over heels for – it’s joyous, wonderfully wild and 100% responsible for my pairing red socks with loafers this year…
